Goodness, this is an incredible article. Here’s the first paragraph - which I’ve purposely split into three to facilitate reading.

We give thanks this Sunday for a nifty little reminder that it only apparently takes thousands upon thousands of Americans screaming at a member of Congress for weeks at a time to make that congressman–a senator, in fact–publicly acknowledge the headlines about his own daughter’s (and granddaughter’s) claimed abuse at the hands of her former husband, who is naturally another Republican congressman.

We’re talking of course about junior Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno, recently vying for the title of the most pathetic man in Congress, given that he spent several years pretending not to know anything about the fact that his daughter Emily Moreno had accused her congressman ex-husband, Ohio Rep. Max Miller, of repeated emotional and physical abuse of her and their two-year-old daughter.

Despite knowing all about this for at least the last two years by his own admission, Bernie Moreno intentionally went out of his way not to say a bad word about the fellow GOP congressman who was his former son-in-law, instead tacitly supporting his reelection in the upcoming November midterm elections, in a race that was until recently seen as a very safe one for Republicans. Not so much, now.

I absolutely agree, though the reasonable side of me just wants to note that while Conservatism is evil as an ideology, being conservative (little c) isn’t inherently bad and, in fact, is required in order to be properly progressive; you cannot build a proper future without a solid foundation. Conserve what works, discard what weighs you down, build newer and better, rinse repeat. See: boiling water for power meme.

Modern right-wing movements are a global net negative on society, but I just hesitate to fully endorse blanket statements like yours because while the overall movements and ideologies tend to be oppressive and bad for society, there are still sensible elements and issues raised that are worth considering.

That said, if the Republican party got Thanos Snapped tomorrow my antisocial autistic ass would throw the biggest party in the world with open invitations. I’ll make pizza, you just bring the dough.

It’s really a marketing coup for Conservatives that that’s what people think conservative means. Unfortunately, that’s not what conservatives typically mean. And when it is, their idea of “what works and what weighs you down” is usually like “let’s not let women vote”
