Like the Romans used to drink from lead cups. Something like that.

Driving a gas/diesel car, car centric societies are hell for health. I mean car is useful but we should not use it everyday and need it to do everything.

Pollution (from combustion and tire wear) provoke breath illness and weakens our immunity system, have you seen a spike on asthma issues?

Lack of physical exercise make us sick.

Petrol gives cancer, how does it is not written on every gas pump, like for tobacco ?

consuming short-form content; the behavior can be compared to getting a quick hit from your vape whenever you get bored.

What? This is nonsense. I’ve lived in a city for 12 years, I love it and would never want to live anywhere else. I work in a factory that is closer to suburbs and more rural areas, it’s where almost all my coworkers are from. They’re way more in tune with “conforming” to the typical get married, start a family, keep up with the Joneses lifestyle. They mostly like to talk about lawn upkeep and golfing lol.

The city has a vibrant art and music scene, so many places to eat from plenty of different cultures and cuisines, the ability to walk or bike or take public transit and do whatever you want to do. To be able to go out at night to bars, clubs, underground DIY music venues, socialize, etc.

A lot of my coworkers’ daily lives center around their kids’ schedule, maybe going out to a chain restaurant once in a while, living in very car-centric and pretty boring (to me) places. The countryside has its perks, and I love being out in nature, but the city has so much more to offer. Different strokes for different folks

The unhealthy obsession of cleansing and abstinence from vices. Enjoy your beer/meat/smoke/etc just don’t make it a problem.

Also it goes hand in hand with disinformation.

Btw, Trump is weirdly quiet about fake-news now that the techbros have sucked up to him?

Definitely. The affects of advertising sticks for generations. Nazi is basically a very successful advertising campaign for motivating traumatized Germans. The “Just Say No” campaign created an entire generation with an irrational hatred of drugs. I still remember with perfect clarity tv advertising slogans from when I was a kid. We are basically dropping atomic meme-bombs on ourselves.

I have my own unproved theory that the increase in problems with focus and attention spam of children are not from screens, tik tok, or infinite scroll. They are from advertisements, a format deliberately crafted to be short, intense and to mess with your brain so you buy.

Advertisements in media have been growing over the years and becoming more hypnotic and intense also.

Tiktok emulates the advertising format as user-generated content.

On screens, I believe they are not a root cause, but contribute to the attention span problem. The reason is that they have limited real estate, and thus lend themselves to presenting information piecemeal. This leads to the user failing to get a big picture view, and new generations who use only phones may eventually atrophy the capability to even form a big picture. Small screens are effectively blinders for the modern brain.

one of the moderators came through and removed every reply that he disagreed with

All comments are intact on my end, i.e. on Lemmy.world, except for two deleted by the author. Check for yourself (in a browser). The one by gastroglizzy@piefed.social is a joke written that way by the commenter.

Some of the people running Piefed are known to be rather crazy.

P.S. That said, I opened the post on Piefed, and everything is also there. OP is just butthurt that their comment got downvoted.

Commuting back and forth five days a week working mindless jobs producing next year’s landfill so you can pay for food that half of it ends up in the trash, while talking earnestly about pollution and climate change.

We had the chance to build a low-emission leisure society.

The online outrage culture seems extremely exhausing from the outside. It’s like some people just want to look for reasons to get mad about.

It’s a variant of the domination urge, I think. Getting offended turns the whole of culture into a gun in your hand. Then you shoot your opponent. Then you win.

Mentally it’s improved my life immeasurably. It took my out of my teenage shell, helped me socialise, introduced me to countless new experiences and people.

I’m lucky in that it hasn’t been problematic for me. Yes, it’s bad for you physically. A lot of things are. But I’d rather have it in my life than without.

That’s just my lived experience and I’d in no way refute the science. But I’d push back a little on the somewhat puritanical Alcohol = bad that many here sometines sanctimonious indulge in.
