On screens, I believe they are not a root cause, but contribute to the attention span problem. The reason is that they have limited real estate, and thus lend themselves to presenting information piecemeal. This leads to the user failing to get a big picture view, and new generations who use only phones may eventually atrophy the capability to even form a big picture. Small screens are effectively blinders for the modern brain.
