Really poor wording on this article. Most people don’t think “bringing your phone into the shower,” means “leave your phone in the bathroom while you take a shower.”
I read it as number one and still got confused why people did this. I leave it in another room while I take a shower… is that not what people normally do?
Yeah, I always leave the phone outside the bathroom, never even thought to bring it with me. I guess this the new age addiction to bring phones everywhere you go even inside of your own home.

I’ve noticed an increasing number of people that use their phone the entire time they’re at the urinal in public restrooms. This takes what? A minute tops? I’ve also seen people set it next to the sink to keep looking while washing their hands…assuming they even do to begin with.

the $20 phone I got is almost completely unusable as a phone, but for browsing social media/playing music/readin books in the shower it would probably last a few weeks while being cheap enough to not care about replacing it.

Back before smartphones, when everyone was bleaching the tattletale to get the phone warrantied after getting even a little water near it, there was a rumor going around. Kids with friends in Japan were hearing that people over there had waterproof cellphones and would be talking while in the shower. We were super jealous, not for shower talking, but for the feature. I’d think ICP rated phones today should be able to handle some humidity.

These days I’ll shower with a resistant earbud in, listening to music. I shower early/late and don’t want the music to wake my partner. (probably less likely than the shower itself, but that’s how i roll)

Notthst I’m cheating with other women (seriously who can be bothered) my phone is locked with my fingerprint. As much as we share a lot in life I have not given her copies of my fingerprints so she couldn’t unlock the phone anyway. In theory she knows the passcode but since she asks me for it every single time she needs to use my phone I’m recently confident she doesn’t retain it.
My last partner and I had fingerprints on each other’s devices just for convenience sake, mostly so that we can text on each other’s behalf while the other was driving or in case of an emergency situation.
I would argue doing this right takes way more Trust than just keeping the boundaries up , and that I wouldn’t prescribe it for most couples.
I used to have a perfectly working system with a waterproof bag-thing for the phone and a bluetooth speaker somewhere outside of the shower so I could watch youtube videos while just chilling in the shower.

Not often, because I like bathing and using phone is wasting your water relaxation time. But, I do use it sometimes when I want music or am in the middle of something and also need or want to take a shower or bath.
Phone reading in the bath is amazing.

I do it all the time. Before smart phones were a thing I had a water proof shower radio. Now I use the phone for the same thing. Mostly listening to news or a podcast or something. Sometime it’s a Nebula video, but in the shower I’d just be listening to it like a podcast anyway. Before phones were waterproof I used to use a waterproof Bluetooth speaker.
I’ve never had steam cause a problem, but then again my showers aren’t long, aren’t very hot and my phone is kept pretty high up and out of the way.

“Everyone” does not use their phone while eating or pooping. I make an effort to engage with mine as little as possible, in a perfect world checking it when I wake up when I get home and before bed. For me the phone is a weird mix of useful tool and addictive drug, almost impossible to drop entirely but very much worth limiting access to. Constant stimulation is certainly a choice you can make, but probably not a healthy one. I view what you’re doing the same way you might view someone saying they always drink a beer in the shower.

You can get a waterproof Bluetooth speaker pretty cheap. Better sound and zero risk of anything happening to the phone. I love mine.
Like a few other commenters, I had never even thought that taking your phone into the shower was a thing until I saw this post.
Just… why? Why risk it? Your average smart phone is anywhere from $500 to over $1000, so what’s so important that you’re deliberately exposing it to water and the risk of dropping it (especially if you’re using shampoo, conditioner, soap or any other bathroom product designed to act as a cleaning agent)? Surely whatever it is can wait however long it is you’re showering for?
Personally, I wouldn’t want a friend/relative/whatever phoning me or answering the phone if they were in the shower or using the bathroom.
I can understand one of the other comments about using it to listen to podcasts/music/videos/etc., and at least in that case the phone is presumably far enough away (and not being regularly accessed) that it’s at lower risk. Fair enough – I sometimes do that whilst washing dishes. Still, I think I’d struggle trying to listen to something whilst actively showering – too much other noise.
Put a bluetooth speaker in the shower instead of your phone; it’s not like you can work the screen with wet hands anyway.
SInce my speaker stopped working, I’ve taken to putting the phone in a plastic baggie hanging from the curtain rod between the curtains.

The speaker on my Pixel 7 is plenty loud, but so is the water in the shower.
I also listen to podcasts, which are usually mixed quieter than music, and require more volume to pick up quieter consonants.
Get a little Bluetooth speaker. I keep my phone next to the speaker outside the shower, and I hear it fine.

The shower is the one place where I can have some peace and switch off. No news, no noise, no immediate crises that need solving. Just listen to the running water, enjoy for a bit, feel a little bit more relaxed and clean afterwards. A phone would achieve the exact opposite.

Meh. I started doing this with my iPod 10 ish years ago, continued it with an Android that had no IP rating, and still do it with an IP-rated flagship. Over daily showers all that time I have yet to drop or have one fail. I have also used them in the rain on occasion. If something happens I will consider a 1 in 3,000 occurence not bad.

I mean i kinda get it i take fifteen minute showers but ill put on a video helps me keep time too so i know how long i been in there. I also don’t take super hot showers so there’s no steam, idk maybe yeah if i had the shower all the way hot it’d be a problem but i take a nice hot shower and there’s not much steam idk

Some special shampoos require you to be sitting there for like 10 minutes until it does its thing. I thought it was safe since water was no longer coming out of the shower, I didn’t consider the high humidity environment.

Feels so awkward to jack off in the shower. I much prefer doing it sitting in the toilet.
When I say special shampoo I mean it. Like the one time my dog got fleas so I used anti-flea dog shampoo just in case. It took forever.
Why not use that time to soap up and rinse off your body while you wait for the shampoo to do its thing? That’s what I do.
Washing and rinsing doesn’t take that long. I usually shave or clean the shower while I wait, and even that doesn’t take long enough sometimes
Some hair dyes can have you standing there for 10 or 20 minutes.
Sometimes just enjoying the steam is nice. It’s taking a lot of Blood Sweat and Tears to build a modern world, we are fortunate to have hot safe water on top. I’m going to spend my time and money standing under the boiling shower head and enjoy myself for far longer than everyone else is going to decide is reasonable, I’m going to keep reading and listening while I do so.

Not putting the cart back inconveniences other people. Listening to your phone in the shower, or not, hurts no one. Not the same level of “petty” issue at all. One is trying to make a simple part of society better and the other is deciding how others spend their time at home.
How long do you spend in the shower? Do you have time to turn off your brain for 5–10 minutes? I recommend it from time to time. Sometimes I even drive to work, or especially from work, without any audio on. It’s surprisingly relaxing.
But maybe I’m talking to one of the generations who grew up with mobile phones. I imagine it’s harder for them.

I deleted that because sounded way too pissy, apologies. I definitely don’t get enough time away but I have been actively trying and have noticed my brain feels clearer and calmer. Some days I do want the endless distraction though and I think that’s totally fine, as long as it isn’t every day. I did have nonstop something going for a few years and I didn’t realize how miserable and forgetful I was

I mean, I just set my phone just outside the shower and turn the volume up a touch. Once upon a time I had a weatherproof bag I’d seal my phone in that was originally meant for a solar powered flashlight for emergency use. The bag was triple sealed and I doubt any steam reached the phone.

A whole lot of judgy comments throughout this thread. I’ve been bringing my phone into the shower for the past 15 years, and quit bagging them since all the flagship handsets were IP67 rated or stronger.
I accept the liability of it, and it has not been a problem for me by and large, and I have no regrets.
I would estimate as much as 5% or 8% of my phone use has been standing there in an enjoyably hot shower and listening to podcasts or puzzling through some idea (building an estimated moving cost to relocate to another market for example, and all its tax implications) or catching up on all the personal correspondence that I had ignored for the day.
If that makes me a monster, at least I’ll be an specially clean one.

But I would question my relation to my work if I can’t stop it even while taking a shower. We’re not built to be working every seconds we’re awake.

I used to have a waterproof Bluetooth speaker, but it was actually better than having your phone with you since it was right there in the shower.

Me. I have a phone mount installed in the shower. I need my dopamine receptors to be constantly stimulated from artificial sources, or I can’t accomplish basic tasks like cleaning/showering/cooking. Executive Dysfunction is a bitch.
People with normal dopamine levels just can’t relate, so I get a lot of flack and am often called lazy. Which is annoying as hell because I genuinely want to be a functioning adult, but my stubborn brain just refuses to let me accomplish anything without external stimulation. It’s torture being labeled something you’re not, just because someone can’t understand what it’s like when your brain won’t make the reward chemicals on its own. But it is what it is.
Also BTW I’ve been doing this for a decade and only once has a phone actually died on me from water damage. So I don’t worry about it. I’m clumsy so I always have an insurance plan for my phones regardless…

Stimulants like Adderall, PEA, Octodrine, and Propylhexedrine are a half decent band-aid, but they raise my blood pressure and make me feel “tweaky” so I don’t want to take them every day. They feel like they’re slowly killing me. I mean imagine taking meth every single day. That’s what it feels like for me. Unfortunately since tolerance builds rapidly, I have to take massive doses for it to continue working, further compounding the problem.
So I try not to take stims more than a few times a month, because even once a week is too much for me. It sucks ass that there’s no long-term solution for ADHD. Just temporary fixes that rapidly stop working.
Can we just take a moment to say, it is insane to me that the general public would prescribe drugs onto a neurospicy person just so that they felt normal about their predisposition and judgmental about everyone else’s in how they use their assistive technology?
