The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said they are investigating a multistate outbreak of E. coli infections potentially linked to Sierra Nevada Graziers raw milk cheese.
Thirteen people in nine states have been sickened in the E. coli outbreak, including eight who were hospitalized and three who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a potentially serious complication of E. coli infection that presents with bloody diarrhea and fever, according to the CDC. No deaths have been reported, the FDA said.
States with E. coli cases linked to raw milk cheese include California, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Tennessee and Utah.
How do American get this wrong? Half the cheese in Europe is from unpasteurised milk.
The pursuit of profits above all else, presumably. Or perhaps just plain old human error.
Well let’s hope they can fix it.
We let the states come up with the rules. Instead of the fed mandating best practices, they just recommend pasteurization. Europe has stricter testing and hygiene rules. IIRC, there’s not a significant difference in people getting sick in between the two.
That said, The current administration gutted the hell out of the food safety departments and started getting some real hell over it, so they’re now they’re ‘finding’ a new thing to recall every week. It’s WAY too frequent for it to be real every time. edit: that said this one is very likely real
I worry about the health and safety of you guys across the pond. Not only is your government rolling back mandatory vaccinces , they are also turning food into a russian roulette.
Most of our damage is self-inflicted. The vast majority avoid raw milk products and still get the vaccines anyway. The crew that doesn’t are mostly made up of the science deniers who won’t believe anything is real until it’s happening to them. So it’s truth by Darwin with truly unfortunate collateral damage of people who can’t medically get the vaccines.
The food roulette has taken some lives. Perhaps the best outlook we can have on that is those who were ok with food safety being dismantled now might consider it was there for a good purpose and was not doge worthy.
The EU has like 3x as many Listeria cases per capita compared to the US because like half the cheese is unpasteurized. The US does have a lot more E. coli across many vectors so there’s a few factors but gutting regulatory bodies has obviously been making things worse.
Not just cheese we have yoghurt that are unpasteurised too.
Regulations exist because there was a problem being ignored. Companies still love ignoring problems so this shit keeps happening.
Why don’t raw milk people just go lick the ground in the milking shed, since it’s pretty much equivalent and it would be a lot quicker.
I know you are joking but based on the response from COVID, I think you could turn licking a dairy floor into a buisness.
If the trumplet does not want people to lick the floors of dairy farms, who mind to disagree. Each to the round.
Sorry, what? People are drinking unpasteurised milk ?
Yeah they’re the same idiots that refused to get a vaccine for a potentially deadly disease. Go figure.
Just a moment… I’m getting a truckload of unpasteurised warm milk delivered to destiny church.
Yes lol it’s a big thing in NZ too amongst crunchy conspiracy types
It’s almost like Louis Pasteur was on to something
More reasons to continue boycotting American goods in Canada.
Terrifying part of this is if recalls get bad enough, Trump will simply order they stop recalls and telling us they is a problem at all.
You mean a bacteria found in the feces of nearly half the population of dairy cattle contaminated REAL milk? Like, I mean the udders are several inches off the ground and cows notoriously never lay down, so where could this come from?
Must be big Pasteurizer sabotaging the pure REAL milk products and keeping the sheeple from consuming the REAL milk products the lord has given us. They want us weak and feeble and only untouched milk straight from the udder can grace my temple of a body. No Satan, not today! You will not take my REAL milk from me!
Oh hey, I seemed to have dropped something ヽ(´ー`) /s
they poop where they eat, i think thier UDDERS get dirty from thier own feces though, even ifs not directly touching, the "juices’ could trickle to the udders.
OK so you have never seen a cow poo before.
The “material” comes out in a high pressure jet. It is a kinda thick paste, it will splash because cows are quite tall.
The splash from their own stream may contaminate the udders, but they will often get splashed or just shat on from another cow.
They’re also not very choosy about where they step, so they’ll just kick poo around all day for a nice even coating.
It is almost like raw milk is not a good idea.
No problem. The owner will donate some money to Trumps pocket, and the FDA will start looking elsewhere.
Surprise, surprise, surprise!
You shouldn’t be allowed to sell “raw” cheese. It’s unsafe.
The people who did so should face charges analogous to, I don’t know, attempting to poison a bunch of people. Fucking nail them to the wall.
It can be relatively safe if the producers are held to high hygiene standards. The aging process kills most harmful microbes. If you’re pregnant, though, you should probably avoid cheese from raw milk unless it’s been heated.
And you can pry my boerenkaas from my cold dead hands!
Europe about to be so mad at you.
I’m okay with it as long as it’s clearly labeled and doesn’t leave the state; preferably the county. The further it travels the harder it gets to trace and the more time bacteria has to multiply.
Nonsense. Unpasteurized cheese tastes way better. Labeling should be clear and you make the choice.
Perhaps you would prefer to live in a dystopia where the bread is full of sawdust and the milk is rotten.
Perhaps you’d prefer the dystopia where animals are pumped full of antibiotics?
There’s worse stuff being put into food than sawdust already. Be careful out there.
There’s worse stuff being put into food than sawdust already.
Yeah why have health standards at all why not just put saw dust in bread. What are weird argument.
Worse stuff…like E.coli.
I’m not exactly some kind of cheese expert, but I’ve eaten a lot different cheeses in my day
I’d agree that on average, unpasteurized cheeses taste better
But some of the best cheeses I’ve had have also been pasteurized.
I think it’s mostly the size of the difference kinds of operations and how much care they put into their products.
There’s a lot of mediocre manufactures making pasteurized cheese and they’re making industrial quantities of it.
Whereas the companies making raw milk cheeses tend to be smaller operations where they’re putting more care into their product. They can be choosier about where their milk comes from, and are more hands-on with the process.
But if you can find a brand that puts that kind of care into it but pasteurizes their products, I haven’t found there to be a dramatic difference.
I want to live in a world where I have to know that some unstandardized label is going to get me sick or not. Yeah. I definitely want to deal with memorizing all that shit and rolling the dice on things we know, generally, make the population sick. Not just cheese. Why stop there? Vegetables, fruits, meat, fuck it. Let’s make sure we “label” everything and let masses decide if it’s worth the risk or not. Like a game of Russian roulette each time I go to the grocery store. Sounds awesome.
How do people not just recognize this as corporations saying “enjoy the parasites” we’ll sell them to you for profit.
Like, fuck, the unpasteurized cheese you enjoyed that was source from a local farm one time is NOT what the fuck we are discussing. We are discussing massive corporations that produce the majority of our food deciding that removing health standards is more profitable.
No one is trying to stop you from the thing you’re even talking about. I’m glad you enjoyed the cheese. But that cheese is gonna be gone when the massive corporations start selling it nationwide and push them out of the market because “the thing I can already get” just got allowed to exist on an industrial scale because of lowering health standards.
Fuck. It’s so annoying when people try to apply their individual experience to a nationwide level of production and health.
Please stop being so fucking stupid. Holy shit. YOU CAN ALREADY GET THAT CHEESE! That’s not what we are talking about!
I wouldn’t try unpasteurised cheese from a big US brand, knowing what the hygiene standards and oversight for cattle are like. That said, I’ve regularly eaten unpasteurised cheese from Spain, France and the Netherlands and I don’t think those need to be banned (in the EU or their respective countries). I don’t think they’re comparable to unpasteurised cheese from the US though, especially since the budget cuts to the FDA.
the point is saying unpasteurised cheese is always horribly unsafe is to me wrong. it can be done relatively safely, but in the US currently it will not be done safely.
I’ve had raw milk still warm from the cow, literally watched it get milked. The majority of people don’t understand the problems that arise between udder and grocery store shelf are why we need safety regulations or any kind of nuance.
There’s plenty of potential problems in the milking shed, starting with properly cleaning the udder before milking. Cow shit gets everywhere.
Yes, I thought I covered that with ‘problems between udder and grocery store’
I want to live in a world where food producers are held to safety standards… Oh wait, I do, in Europe many normal cheeses are made from unpasteurised milk and we’re not generally getting sick from them. There are plenty of huge corporate nationwide/continent-wide camembert producers in France… They still have to obey food safety laws.
I admit this rant was too boring to read the whole thing but hopefully you realize that most of the entire world does not require pasturizing cheese. You’ve got a lot of work ahead of you if that’s your goal. In the meantime I’d read the labels carefully.
I’ve never understood the attraction of raw milk. I am a big fan of pasteurization.
My sister buys her milk fresh from a local farmer. I really don’t understand why she would do that. Milk is already gross by design, but it’s not like she takes particular good care of her milk. It’s setimes out longer than i would be comfortable and also open… Idk.
Why are they hospitalizing these people and investigating the milk? Isn’t this what they wanted?
you can put a brand on something illegal?
Raw milk cheese isn’t illegal though?
It is(or was) in USA
Importing fresh, raw cheese is illegal. Production and sale within the country is mostly controlled by state regulations but “raw cheese is illegal” is an incorrect blanket statement.
No it wasn’t.
Raw milk cheese is perfectly fine. It just has to be aged for at least 60 days at or above 35 degrees F.
pasteurization is required and unpasteurized is banned, i haven’t kept up to date since Trump tho
No, pasteurization has never been a hard requirement. The requirement has been aged 60 days for a long time now.
That means that soft raw cheeses like Brie are effectively banned, because you can’t really age them like that. But there has always been plenty of aged cheeses made from raw milk.
Here’s a WSJ article about it from 2010. https://web.archive.org/web/20150711000630/https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702304370304575151663770115120
Raw milk has been legal to sell in some form in 29 states going back to the early 00s as well. A few states like California have allowed raw milk to be sold at retailers, and plenty more have allowed it to be sold direct from the farmer.
Ah 29 states, I’m in the states where it wasn’t legal (but i see it in some stores now unfortunately)
I just found out cheese isn’t cooked in some way.
Most cheeses actually use pasteurized milk. Some styles use raw milk though.
It’s quite common in Europe, and folks tend to say cheese from unpasteurised milk tastes superior to pasteurised.
