With the midterms just weeks away, Tommy Tuberville set his sights on the furry community.

During a nearly 20-minute speech filled with misinformation about transgender people and a fear-mongering call to bring back mental institutions as “a normal part of our society,” Tuberville claimed that furries “[tout] the fact that… many airline pilots, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers are part of the furry community.” He did not provide any evidence as to where this information came from.

Then the came for the Furries?

      I had a job once that required considerable business travel. One time I had to show up somewhere on short notice, and hadn’t realized my staff had booked me at a large hotel holding a furry convention. It was all fine, they were gracious and funny, though I could have done without the couple in fursuits fucking in the corridor when I came in near midnight after a long workday. To their credit, they did give me a little wave and paused until I went past.

      If it had been a convention of rightwingers, it would have been far, far worse. They tend to be mean drunks.

    Been flying for over 30 years. This “furry” thing…isn’t a thing in flying. And even if it’s a thing in people’s off time, nobody is talking about it.

    And who gives a damn what people do in their off time as long as they do their job right.

    Let’s not address the actual issues with ATC funding, but go after a (probably) very small demographic that has nothing to do with the problems at hand. Dude went down a furry rabbit hole one night, got scared because he was excited, and invented something to convince himself he’s not interested.

      He’s running for governor of alabama and needed something to get his name in the news so there’d be something to spin. He’s running against one of the prosecutors of the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing, and that sound bite is what his media team thought would be sufficient for the people of alabama.

      Pilots have been meowing and making annoying broadcasts for decades. Just to say that the chances it’s a part of furry culture are very slim. Truckers will also be annoying on the radio. It’s a matter of the call of the void and someone thinking they’re funny and thinking it doesn’t cause any real harm (and it largely doesn’t, but you never know who will turn the radio off or need to broadcast an emergency and can’t).

      Fear mongering is effective, it’s why they quote mine to misrepresent people to make them look scary or put a bunch of actors dressed as pigs on an ad and say something like ‘John Politician licks murderers butt holes, would you vote for a person who agrees with all your policy positions and values but doesn’t praise fascists‽’
