I think the stat is for every 8 people we execute one is exonerated from death row.

That’s just not accurate enough for it to be a viable solution. Life in prison can at least be reversed if you get it wrong. If you kill somebody there are no take backs, and our legal system is too imperfect for permanent punishments.

Its also disproportionately applied. Has a rich person ever ended up on death row? Feels like if we’re not going to execute sociopaths who kill hundreds of people by cutting corners on buildings and products why on earth would we be executing people for like killing a CEO?

So… How about you get going then? Execute as many as you can, in as little time as possible. That way you can get all the innocent prisoners exonerated. Well at least you won’t have innocent people on death row.

I have no hope for the US anymore. How can a person arguing for an increase in executions, based on the premise that it will find the innocent people on death row faster, be taken even remotely seriously?

It may be that I’m not an American, but in my European naivete I thought that had managed to punch a hole in Poe’s law.

Am I OK? IDK, are you?

Death penalty is a sure sign of being primitive and backwards. But honestly, those MAGA brains will probably take this as a compliment…

I hate MAGA but I definitely support the death penalty!! We have very little justice in Canada and there are plenty of dirtbag, lifelong criminals that don’t deserve to breathe the same as air as the rest of us. Some of these dirtbags deserve medieval treatment before being put down as well!

It’s not about whether a perpetrator deserves to live or not. It’s about the reliabilty of the judicial system. Even this day and age with our amazing forensic techniques, plenty of innocent people get indicted instead of the actual perpetrators. It’s also about what executing people does to the society doing the executions. Honestly, I have tons of sympathy for the character Hawkeye in Avengers: Endgame. However in this sort of fiction the people getting killed absolutely certainly are guilty. Reality is much more messy than that.

Yeah I suspect you’re one of the dirtbags - I can’t prove it, but as we know there never is 100% proof - but that doesn’t seem to be a problem for you - so off to the hangman you go!
