Probably Nickelback. I’m no fan, but they seem to get the most hate of anyone just for being mediocre.

I think the whole hating on Nickelback started with people who thought Nickelback was the best band in the world. They’re like the most average band in the world. They’re not bad, but they aren’t particularly good either.

I read somewhere once that their agent would book them at any festival that would accept them. That lead to them getting booed a lot where they didn’t match the rest of the lineup. People began to anticipate them and became a heel type character to avid concert goers.

Foo Fighters, for some reason, are fucking loved, and yet if you actually listen to their albums, they’re just… meh

they got a few good songs and a lot of things I never want to hear again. and that’s coming from someone whose favourite band was them for a very long time. not to mention they sound like shit live

Comedy Central destroyed Nickleback. There was a comedy special or show, I don’t remember. Anyway, they promoted the show with a clip from a stand-up bit that was at Nickleback’s expense. I you watched The Daily Show, or South Park, you would have seen that ad a hundred times. After that, liking Nickleback was an embarrassment.

What follows is my bad recollection of the joke.

People say that music can incite violence and I think that’s true because every time I listen to Nickleback I want to hurt… Nickleback.

I remember that, and this is accurate. Thing is, Brian Poesehn is famously a hard core heavy metal fan, and seems to judgementally hate anything but what he personally likes, so Nickelback got taken down by a guy with questionable taste.

For me it’s “Photograph.” Such an aggressively sappy and mediocre song. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of an essay I would have written on the bus on the way to school in 6th grade.

I kind of like “Never Again”, it’s a bit heavy-handed but it’s got crunchy guitar and the message is good, don’t put up with abusive shit.

Imagine Dragons. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding is:

They picked up hate for being marketed like they’re some kind of super hard rock, even though they’re not. But their music is good for the genre it is. The lead singer was raised Mormon, but is now an activist for LGBT youth.

It’s difficult to autotune screaming and sound that good. As a Windmill scene fan, the problem with Imagine Dragons is not the vocals (the lead has awesome technical abilities); it’s the lack of a point.

His only other controversial stuff seems to be being a climate change denier and anti-vaxxer but I put that down to stupidity over any malice on his part.

Gotcha. Ghost is a metal pop concept band, where the front man is an ongoing chain of satanic antipopes (while still being the same dude in face paint). Only they are all really bad at converting the world to Satan worship on account of doing the actual work is no fun, and what’s the point of being the satanic antipope if you aren’t gonna have fun.

Sounds great! Only… Metalheads are like “this isn’t metal” and they’re kinda right. Its pop music, but metal and satanic.

Also, the front man may have fucked over his bandmates, or maybe not, depends really. I’m inclined to say his behavior may have been shitty, but that’s something you should work out beforehand.

A lot of fellow metal heads out there don’t like it when music is fun enough to be enjoyed by people who don’t keep a closet full of long-sleeved band shirts. A couple years ago I ran into an old coworker at a Fleshgod Apocalypse show and they got angry when I asked if they were interested in tagging along to an upcoming Dethklok show.

I’m sure “most hated” has already been covered, so I’ll go farther down the list and pick one that’s a little hated and IMHO more than “not bad”: Crash Test Dummies.

Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm gets clowned on by people who remember it, but (1) it’s pretty good, and (2) CTD’s first three albums are full of super catchy folk-pop-rock with decent lyrics. Some of the third album, and then subsequent stuff gets deeper and deeper into Brad Roberts’ then-current interests and generally doesn’t grab me, but more power to him.

Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm itself was undoubtedly picked to be sonically polarizing and grab more attention than some of the slightly less “Crash Test Dummyish” tracks.

Superman’s Song may even be vaguely familiar if you were reading comics in those days, as it came out not too long before the (in)famous Death of Superman arc.

Lars Ulrich of Metallica is I think the most hated metal musician today, with the Napster case and his recent performances which are way too snare-heavy if you ask me (some would use the word “lazy”).

But the large majority of the metal scene acts as if he was the worst drummer ever, which is obviously not the case. If you go and listen to Metallica’s 80s and early 90s stuff, including bootlegs of live performances, this drummer is more than capable, but he also invented a lot of fills and patterns that came to be used prominently by others, like Mike Portnoy.

So I’m not saying this in defense of the guy - don’t know him personally - but that’s a blatant case of people not listening with their ears if you ask me…

I remember my roommate said they should rename the album from ‘Play’ to ‘Songs for Adverts’, as it seemed like every commercial used a track from it at one point, which probably didn’t help the overplayed criticism.

At least in the thrash scene, Anthrax gets shit on a lot for being part of the Big 4, however I fucking love them, even though they had a period where every release was dogshit. Their early stuff is peak thrash, which is good because nowadays they mainly stick to playing their early stuff. Still deserving of their position. Though sometimes I wonder if it should be a Big 5, including Exodus, who were one of the first.

Years ago I went to the Slayer farewell tour. There were a lot of bands that I had wanted to see for a long time: Testament, Behemoth, Lamb of God, and Anthrax.

In my opinion, Anthrax stole the show. I hadn’t listened to them much before that show, but on my way back home I played a lot from their catalog and realized I had been missing out.

Agreed. However the big 4 was never about the “best 4” bands, it was the “bestselling 4” or “gateway bands”. They should have been treat as the 4 bands to start out with, however people seem to think they are the best bands and therefore there is no point listening to other thrash🙄. Which couldn’t be further from the truth.

Taylor Swift, the modern version. She used to be a genuinely talented singer songwriter but has gone way too far into the popstar life. I remember her playing solo songs on an acoustic guitar, and she was good.

I mean people like Chris Brown and Kanye both make themselves hated for things outside their music. Then there are people like Prince who would act like they were all high and mighty and have his staff tell everyone to not look him in the eye or even look at him. Was his music good, sure… But if someone told me not to look at him I’d mark it as a red flag and not buy his shit.

The “Don’t look them in the eye” rule is as misunderstood as Van Halen’s removal of brown M&Ms.

When famous people have to navigate through hallways, etc., they have to pass others, and many people try to get their attention, so they can say Hi, tell them how much they love the artist, etc. Perhaps they just want to catch their attention and smile.

That artist is a person, like anyone else. They have a lot on their mind, and they are probably trying to get somewhere, to do something, and they are concentrating on that. They don’t want to have to stop for every person, smile, say Hi, hear about how important they are, yadda yadda. They just want to get on with their thing.

Think about how you would feel if you had something important on your mind, with other people counting on you, and waiting for you, and you have to stop and act polite with every random stranger who wants to interact with you, so they can go home and tell everybody. Is it any wonder why celebrities are late to everything?

So they tell their staff to keep people from bothering them, and the easiest way to do that is to simply prohibit anyone from trying to look them in the eye. Obviously, if the VIP approaches you, asks you questions, looks you in the eye, that rule is off.

The M&M thing was because VanHalen had the biggest stage rig ever at the time, and they needed specific electric, lighting, etc. qualifications. They would arrive, and find venues inadequate because the venue didn’t bother to read the contract. So they started adding the M&M thing so they knew as soon as they walked in the door if the venue had read the contract. If there were brown M&Ms, then it meant that the venue either hadn’t read the contract, or had decided to ignore whatever clauses they felt like. Either way was a broken contract problem.

Dudes staff would message everyone who would would be in his vacinity at award shows to tell them not to look him in the eye. He’s not performing, he’s sitting in the stands. Sounds more like he was on the spectrum and couldn’t cope with people well.

How dare you! Why would you suggest that a virtuoso prodigy with serious interpersonal antisocial quirks might be on the autism spectrum

I could definitely see the spectrum angle for obvious reasons, but I swear I heard somewhere it was more a request by his staff because he was too friendly and he’d spend way too long talking to everyone. I may be running off someone else tho

    The Beatles are alright.

They just sound boring to younger people because they were so influential, their work got incorporated into all of pop music.

I don’t personally hate them but my college roommate did because he thought they were boring.

Even if you don’t grasp the context of the times, it’s insane to call them “boring” unless they never listened past “A Hard Days Night” or “Help!”

Right, they aren’t boring by any means, it’s just before they started getting really experimental.

Though they were smoking TONS of weed during Help! and you can def tell that something was different imo. Meeting with Bob Dylan fundamentally changed them.
