Donald Trump has announced he will run for president in 2028 during a rambling speech to the Washington press corps.

Trump was speaking at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner when he appeared to make the announcement.

I won three times, now I’m gonna do it again,” he said, while putting on a cap that read “Trump 2028″.

“I’m gonna do it again. It should be easy.”

He went on to add that he won in 2020 but the election was rigged.

The 80-year-old was met with a smattering of applause, but even he did not seem excited by the moment.

Over the dead body of every patriot that stands for the Constitution, which reads in pertinent part:

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice

-22nd Amendment

*Edit: Here’s the video of his announcement:

More disrespectful to the US than anyone ever thought a self-described American could be. Attributing election rigging by others, while rigging the election himself, ambiguously in reality and in dark, threatening humour.

it’s a stark reminder that the constitution is not immutable. amendments are changes, and they may seem “hard to do” but with this regime and supreme court, they won’t stop until they pretend they did this legally. remember: nazis were legal.

The Supreme Could could declare it a political question, and/or is not self enforcing and would require an act of Congress to Implement.

This is a view that a majority subscribed to in Trump V Anderson regarding the 14th amendment.

Don’t forget that he is only president NOW because we are already ignoring the constitution. Don’t act like breaking a different amendment is any different. We already lost our constitution and rule of law when we stopped enforcing them.

    14th amendment - Section 3

“No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”

He engaged in insurrection, Congress never voted to remove it, he is holding office NOW despite our constitution stating quite clearly he is ineligible.

    Illegitimate president.

Is it though? I’ve already seen arguments like “It only means two CONSECUTIVE terms” and other such bs arguments.

The thing is, if no one enforces a law then you have no law. You can write a rule on a piece of paper, but if you don’t follow it what does it actually mean?

Even without the consecutive terms bit that’s obvious nonsense there is a legitimate legal question that could potentially be used and legal. It’s not a new theory floated for Pedonald, it’s been an unsettled question since the passage of the 22nd Amendment. 22nd Amendment’s relevant bit is

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

By the most narrow, strict reading of the text it only prevents election, if they can find a way to become President without being elected such, there’s a reasonable read that 22 doesn’t trigger. 12th Amendment contains the text

But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.

Does ineligibility to be elected trigger the ineligible to the office clause? Could he run as VP with a loyal puppet who immediately steps down? Main legal opinion is “probably not”, but there’s enough wiggle room there that I wouldn’t trust the current corrupt Supreme Court not to side with him.

Exactly. Two big things at play with all this.

            A. Legal loopholes and bizarre interpretations of wording. We see it every day, lawyers and politicians and the elites find the craziest ways to dodge the laws that bind your or I.

            B. He ALREADY violates COUNTLESS laws and the constitution and the amendments and none of those are being enforced. He violated the 14th by inciting and enabling an insurrection, no consequences. He has committed treason with foreign powers, no consequences. He stole government documents and had them at his damn resort, no consequences. He committed election interference and fraud, no consequences. He diddled little children, no consequences. He’s committed non-stop grifts and scams and frauds with his status of PUBLIC OFFICE as president for personal gain at the expense of the country, no consequences. And no one even wants to read this far, but the list keeps going. Not a single REAL consequence yet, he’s captured all 3 branches of the government and has loyalists everywhere that are stopping any real actions against him, just like a classic mob crime boss.

So if laws can be dodged or interpreted differently and if the laws we do have simple aren’t being enforced then there literally is nothing preventing him from continuing on, and he can make up whatever scenario he wants to pacify his brain-dead-followers into believing it’s the “right thing to do”.

Hell, he could just say “the libs are trying to come get ya! I need to stay president to stop em!” And 77mil people would fall in line. Ugh.

Yeah, the Supreme Court finding that the President was exempt from that wording really shows you the hoops they are willing to jump through to take over the government.

I’m horrified but also morbidly curious to see what bullshit they’ll be coming up with next to let Trump continue to rule.

They can just declare “a term” to mean 10 years. Or say “the law means two CONSECUTIVE terms is the limit” or whatever they want.

If no one stops them or holds them accountable or enforces the law or constitution then what’s the point of having any laws?

Not that laws have ever been fairly enforced, but come on…

The court should be made up of a rotating panel of judges, made up of judges from the district courts, or lower courts in general, so the judges themselves are also subject to the court’s rulings, rather than a few permanent power-hungry narcissists imperiously sitting above us all with no accountability.

Each judge must be part of the Supreme Court for a year or two at a time, call it a “detail,” then they go back to their normal job as a judge.

Ok, yeah, this sounds reasonable to me.

This is still describing an ultimate judicial authority (aka, a “Supreme court”) just one with an alternative formulation of the conditions for which one serves on the court.

Original guy seemed to imply just getting rid of it as a concept entirely.

Here’s what I think. There should be 11 of them, and on an 11 year cycle they should be directly elected by the people 1 per year, 11 year term, 1 term limit. They should be selected from a pool that is made up of high level judges in the country, and the members of that pool who decide to run for the position need to pass some sort of test by an independent board of constitutional scholars.

As the Supreme Court makes rulings, rulings that allow or affirm a right or action should be set in stone and no longer challengeable unless the entire panel of 11 judges unanimously decide that the issue needs to be reheard.

Something like this anyway, I’m sure there is more to consider but this is the general idea that I think would work.

That sounds interesting, especially your view on rulings being unchallengeable. Full disclosure im Canadian so our system has differences.

To me, the root cause of that tension really stems from what I view as an inappropriate use of the judicial as law writers. It’s politically convenient for elected officials to use the cover of some rulings to allow ambiguity to persist in the law.

I think the ultimate cause of this in the US system is the general consensus (which by my read is not the intention of the law) that your constitution is immutable. Rulings on constitutionality are especially important because your constitution is amended so infrequently.

But with any rulings, I think that they should actually be MORE ephemeral, not less, based on the amount of dissent between judges. If a ruling is 5-4, there is a strong argument that the underlying law is unclear. This type of split I think is better resolved by the demand that legislators update or amend the law to add clarity. Judges, as interpreters of the law, are useful in function as a type of “quality check”. A 5-4 ruling, I would argue, amounts to the judicial writing law in the absence of clarity.

A 9-0 ruling? Law is fine. 8-1, probably still pretty good.

Even on a 9-0, there is nothing STOPPING the legislative branch from re-writing law. It is thiers to write and rewrite.

I just think tight splits should trigger some mechanism which demands a law-based resolution to clear up the underlying ambiguity within a specified time frame.

I get why legislators were happy to avoid touching law about things like abortion and let SC rulings be thier cover… they’re elected. It is convenient and safe. But they’re not really doing thier jobs.

              Anyhow, that’s my 0.02

That part will never happen. No matter what - he’s getting away with it. He’s too old to face any real consequences.

What we need to ensure is that responsibility doesn’t end with him. We need a new round of Nuremberg trials and his cronies and enablers need to be held to account.

No mercy. Those in the military who executed illegal orders should be court-martialed and executed.

If I could trust the system to actually enforce the Constitution, I’d say bring it on. The 22nd amendment never prohibits running when you’re ineligible to be elected. I’d actually love to see him run, “win”, and then have to watch his opponent get sworn in because he’s not eligible.

IF I could actually trust that the Constitution would be enforced.

Good Lord. If trump looked any more like roadkill, he’d have to fight to keep RFK Jr from trying to eat him. He looks like absolute dogshit. I didn’t think it was possible for somebody to look worse than Steve Bannon, and to be fair it’s really fucking close, but trump does manage to look like a slightly worse, bloated corpse here.

This is my theory: 1. Trump will try to declare a national emergency at the end of September or early October in order to stop the midterms from happening due to the ongoing “conflict” with Iran or any other geopolitical situation that he has caused himself. 2. The midterms will still take place, although it will be heavily scrutinized by the right with the possibility of violence toward people on the left on election day. 3. The midterms will heavily favor the Democrats leading to a total wipeout for Republicans in all states as a result the Republicans will cry foul and that they were cheated, causing immediate January 6 style riots all over the country and possibly even the capital again. 4. Regardless of the results of the midterms, Trump will use their results too justify him running in 2028 and at the beginning of next year he will do everything in his power to get the Supreme Court and anybody else to stand behind his presidential run and next summer, he will immediately pivot into campaigning. 5. While I do believe it is over for Trump and the Republicans, there’s always that small what if. If he manages to stay alive until 2028 I have that saddening feeling that there is a very good possibility he could win again. I will happily eat my own words on all of this, after it’s just a theory…stay safe and informed everyone.
