I built Soundmoji because Android Auto message readouts still handle emoji badly. A message that should feel quick and natural turns into things like the emoji name being spoken aloud, which feels robotic and breaks the tone.
Soundmoji is a free Android beta that replaces supported emoji with short local sounds inline while the rest of the message is still read normally.
I am looking for blunt feedback, especially from Android Auto users:
- does this improve message playback or feel distracting?
- which emoji should get sounds first?
- which messaging apps matter most?
- what was confusing during install/setup?

The local-sound approach seems promising, but I’d make the fallback behavior very explicit. In a noisy car, a sound that is meaningful in isolation can be ambiguous when several arrive close together. A small set of configurable categories, plus an option to suppress sounds for group chats or while navigating, might help users tune the cognitive load. I’d also test whether users can still infer the emoji intent after a week without looking at the screen.
