My late father told me the toughness can largely be tenderized by boiling it for like an hour, then beating it with a meat tenderizer, before the actual final cooking on the grill/stove/oven/fryer.

I was once given a piece of fully cooked, but not boiled in advance, wild boar meat, about the size of a McDonald’s chicken nugget. It was so damn tough that it literally took me over an hour to chew and swallow.

Oh, it was sometime mid last week that I had to remove about a dozen obviously (to me anyways) fake antivirus, cleaner, and PDF reader apps from her phone. They were spamming her phone left and right saying her phone was full of viruses (of course the malware itself) and saying she was out of storage space (in fact she’s only got 32% space used).

Then of course Samsung, in their infinite wisdom, had to default the power button action to Bixby, which she don’t even use, so I had to go search through the settings to figure out how to configure the power button with the typical sane power/restart menu.

After all that, her phone seemed to work basically perfectly, so I told her to keep me updated on how it works out in the long run, while also respecting her wishes regarding the bible apps, although I was already a bit suspicious of those too.

Yesterday she said she’s getting almost no spam crap like that anymore. Almost? Means there’s still something going on, and I have that sneaky suspicion that the whole avalanche of malware she ended up with started from a random seemingly innocent daily notification from one of those bible reader apps.

You know what’s the worst part about all this? Mama gets all her apps from the Google Play Store…

Yeah, sounds like a good idea, but mama wants the phone to audibly read it out to her when she goes to sleep…

Any suggestions for an open source app that can read it out loud?

My mom likes to hear the phone speak passages out randomly when she goes to sleep.

I’ve found eSpeak and The Light Bible apps on F-Droid, both look like good legit apps, but they don’t work together…

I’m a weird moving target though, I have different devices configured for specific purposes. GB doesn’t have a phone number for me, as I’m almost exclusively WiFi and have no SIM card in my tablet. I haven’t even been logged into GB for over 3 years, I just figured I’d give their app a spin a few times to see what they’re all about.

My tablet stays home, period. It’s never been logged into Google nor GB, I sideload all my apps, I have Google Play Store + Services disabled. Also Location Services have never been enabled. Sure they can do loose location tracking, but the tablet stays home, so they literally never get any of my travel GPS data.

My current phone does have a SIM card, but isn’t logged into Google nor GB.

GB just does have my email address, and it’s the first time (to my knowledge) that they’ve even bothered to email me.

I think they’re just trying to bait me into logging back in and giving them more of that sweet sexy useless data, I ain’t even had a bank account in over a decade…

Extreme case story here…

I had a fella bring his computer into our shop for diagnostics and hopefully repair after a house fire. The case was originally light grey, but it was covered outside and even inside with nasty stinking black soot and the front panel was mostly melted.

We checked it out though, the PSU had failed. So we pulled out our test PSU and tried that, and the nasty stinking computer actually booted up!

Well, the boss didn’t want to be responsible for this mess, so he told me I could take it as a side job if the customer really wanted it fixed. He already knew that I’ve successfully salvaged flood damage computers, so why not?

Anyways, I took the motherboard and expansion cards out and took them to our local car wash. I soaked the boards with tire/engine cleaner, then pressure washed the crud away with plain water. Then I used an air compressor to dry it as best as I could, and then left it on the roof of my car in the hot sun for like 4 hours.

Everything worked fine after all that, so I hooked him up with a spare computer case I had laying around to replace his nasty half melted case.

You can actually pressure wash the circuit boards as long as there’s no power (do NOT pressure wash the PSU at all!), as long as the boards are completely dry and clean before reassembling and powering it back up. Just, be careful around any sensitive parts, and do not pressure wash the CPU socket, unless you like all your precious pins bent. Also, don’t pressure wash the fans or mechanical drives or such.

This technique isn’t for the faint of heart though, and I usually only reserve such drastic measures for boards that have already failed due to spill damage, corrosion, or other extremes where the board would otherwise end up in the scrap pile.
