    Starting in early 1933, the regime used the Reichstag Fire Decree to suspend all constitutional protections of free speech. They subsequently outlawed all criticism of the government or Adolf Hitler, closed opposing newspapers, burned books, and heavily mandated state-licensed journalism. The absence of free expression was a primary tool used to crush all political opposition.
