The term “pink-slime journalism” was coined by journalist Ryan Smith in 2012.[4] A related term, “news mirage”, was coined in 2024 by journalists Miranda Green and David Folkenflik to refer to websites that “look like news, but in truth [serve as] mouthpieces” for corporations or advocacy groups with a non-journalistic agenda.[7]

You are correct, it’s actually a reference to highly processed “pink slime meat” made by taking low quality meat meat scraps, chemically sterilizing them within an inch of their life and forcing them through a fine mesh at high pressure, then forming the resulting homogenized slime into a shape that vaguely resembles a real cut of meat. You know, low quality hot dogs, chicken cutlets and nuggets, hamburger, that kind of thing. Stuff that is technically “meat” but mostly the stuff you’d only eat if you were desperate.
