Being on a construction site “does not open the floodgates to warrantless government intrusion,” a federal judge ruled in a lawsuit filed by a construction worker who has been detained three times by ICE.
From the article it sounds like the ruling is limited to construction sites, but according to the Institute for Justice (the law firm taking on this case) the judge has ordered a stay on the broader policies that led to this:
- Warrantless Entry Policy (which permitted immigration officers to raid private construction sites without a warrant or consent),
- Preemptive Detention Policy (which permitted immigration officers to preemptively detain employees without a particularized suspicion that persons are illegal immigrants), and
- Continued Detention Policy (which permitted immigration officers to continue detaining workers even after they show evidence of citizenship or lawful presence).
Edit: Note that this is a temporary stay while the case proceeds.
America has two parties that are fighting each other: the “corporatist party” (democrats) which want stable markets and international trade, and the “oligarch party” (republicans) who want to return to a feudal system where the “aristocracy” owns and controls everything and the peasants can barely scrape by on a diet of gruel (have you even said ‘thank you’?)
The Democratic Party used to be the party fighting for labor/working class. But in the 90s “third way” democrats (Clinton) decided they needed to embrace corporatists to be able to fund their elections and compete. NAFTA, three strikes laws, dismantling of broadcast regulations which required broadcasters operate in the public interest, ignoring anti-trust laws, happened as a result.
And recently the Republican Party which used to be corporatist moved further right into full-on fasiscism/oligarchy.
This country absolutely needs a party that represents working class Americans because there is none. And any claim to that democrats are “socialist” or “communist” is laughable on its face.
Accurate, but a couple really important notes that people here seem to intentionally overlook.
Even in your accurate negative assessment of both parties, one is a hell of a lot better than the others.
And I don’t think we need a new party. The system doesn’t really allow for it, a new party isn’t a hard requirement, and we shouldn’t add impediments to getting done what needs to get done.
The DSA is that “party”, and certainly for now working within the Democratic party is the way to do it. This has been demonstrated with both the Tea Party and MAGA co-opting and taking over the Republican party.
I’m generally in favor of things like ranked choice and proportional representation, but those things aren’t requirements to lead us in a better direction. Mamdani is working within the Democratic party. It can be done.
