Idk, I like natural flow just fine, it’s just that some people talk slowly compared to others (to e.g. James Duane or Cory Doctorow). I can’t imagine removing every pause from a talk — or rather, I’ve seen videos that are edited that way, and it’s quite jarring.
In fact, I’d prefer if audiobooks had more pauses in appropriate places, namely between chapters. I need a bit of time to file what I just heard under ‘a section ended’ without going into another one without a break.
Eh, YMMV. The apps Overcast and Pocket Casts seem to make it work just fine so much so that I don’t really even notice it once I turn it on for a given podcast. At least with an app, it’s you with the power to change it, or turn it off/on, and you can decide which podcast(s) to turn it on for and how much it does.
I think I know what you mean for certain videos…I hate it when some people use that “clipped” style when the video jumps, often for some kind of comic effect or to emphasize some point - I’m sure it has a name, but holy shit is it something I cannot unsee and I’ve been seeing it for so many years now. It seems so many Youtubers do it, especially if they trend younger. It is one of the most overdone effects ever - to the point that I bet sometime down the line, it will be mocked like the star-wipe effect is a joke from video editing software from the 80s…
It reminds me of that style that radio uses a lot, where something is said, than it’s repeated again with an echo effect, and I’ve been hearing it since the 90s. I’m sure that has a name, too, but hearing these things is like the Wilhelm Scream - once you hear it, you’ll hear it over and over and over…

Not comic really, it’s just all the “uhhh”s and “ummm”s cut out along with pauses that are deemed too long. Basically a way to one-shot the filming process by doing lots of editing. I definitely notice the editing when watching the video, idk for sure if I’d hear it just by the audio.

I think some is done more for “engagement” and editing for time and trying to game the YT algorithm (sigh) and like you said, removing the sneezes, coughs, uhhs and ums and doing it rather inartfully since it’s mostly a disposable format.
I’m talking about a certain style of presentation that seems intentionally done where sentence fragments are kind of chopped together where one word barely or doesn’t even end, and another begins.
What’s worse is I’ve heard Gen Z and alpha sometimes try to imitate this style in everyday speech and if people think vocal fry is annoying, holy fuck, this is 1000x vocal fry.
If it’s spoken word stuff, the feature to remove dead air really helps, too.

Sounds like I’m lucky in having avoided this trend so far. I prefer this kind of speech hyper-editing.
