It’s nationalism, guys like this think AGI is just around the corner and whoever gets it first will become a god, so anyone in the west calling to slow things down on AI is helping the Chinese communists win.

Well, China would rather have AI in China than in the US. I don’t think that that part is what’s dumb about this.

I think that if I were the current American far-right, I’d stop dragging the pope into this stuff. Like, there is an anti-Catholic strain in the far-right that’s been around for a long time, but as I’ve commented before, if you start getting those anti-Catholic Protestants riled up, you’re also probably going to antagonize the Catholics, and a Catholic-Protestant schism in the US would be really bad for the Republican Party, since they’re trying to keep social conservatives as a bloc in their coalition.

I guess it’s more-understandable with Thiel than when Trump was having a spat with the pope, since Thiel isn’t as directly a political operator, but still.

If the pope says something that you don’t like, and you’re a prominent right-wing figure in the US, even if you really have it in for Catholics, you’re probably better-off biting your tongue and just addressing the thing they said, not turning it into a conflict with the person. Like, if I were Thiel, I’d have said “AI is really important to make the US competitive on the international stage” or something. Whatever, but avoid referencing the pope in particular.

He’s been getting into some beefs lately. They seem to be more from the side of others.

The 2027 bingo board gonna be wild. I am hoping we will see the pope vrs tech vampire mma style fight.

Hundreds of countries and thousands of political parties, but Peter picked China and Communism for the Pope.

Because the pope’s message could influence some Americans, but is unlikely to be heeded by people in China, Thiel argued, the encyclical threatened to slow down only one side of the “race between the US and China” to advance AI.

His argument simply doesn’t make sense. After all, communism is about the abolition of religion. The Chinese Communist Party strictly regulates religions in China. Of course, the Chinese are not influenced by the Pope because most of them are not Christian.

I mean, what the hell is he talking about?

The use of the phrase “Chinese Communists” is just fearmongering tailored to the ignorant maga base. It would have been sufficient to just assert that the pope was an agent of the Chinese, but the addition of the word “communists” emphasizes the perception of evil amongst far-right chuds.

Peter Thiel is a complete asshat but I deeply hate the new media campaign being orchestrated by the church. All the Pope had to do was quote one line from Lord of the Rings and jump on the AI hate bandwagon and suddenly, everyone forgets the church helps and protects child rapists and is the largest source of anti-lgbtq propaganda.

The world isn’t black or white, you can support some things someone says/does and not other things
