I’ve heard a “news” segment discussing the popularity of ready made meals from the grocery store, but that does reflect reality or is it mere fiction? If it were the case: is it because they don’t know how to cook at all? Is it due to lack of time left for meal preparation after work or due to cost of living so purchasing those is cheaper?

Grocery stores definitely sell them. They’ll usually have an aisle, or part of one, dedicated to frozen meals. Can’t speak too much about their popularity, though. I myself don’t of anyone who uses them, so I’d wager they’re pretty niche in popularity, at least around where I live.
I would say all of the reasons you list are viable.
