I’m surprised it’s hard to jump into the water, it surrounds the ship and gravity exists. Or was the threat performative? Either way I can’t pretend to know what they are going through. But I also know I like my personal freedom too much to sign up for military service.

Well the flight deck is like 8 stories above the water, so that may have something to do with it.
Especially considering it’s the 2nd most belligerent military on the planet.
On the deck there’s usually netting to catch people who accidently fall off.

It isn’t easy to overcome the desire to live, especially when death chosen is going to be terrifying agony. Jumping overboard is a terrible way to go.
