      Backward propaganda?

“The US is so weak right now! We just totally botched this conflict! We haven’t accomplished anything and now we’re out of munitions… oh man what a mess!”

What would be the point of saying that deliberately?

Admittedly, I don’t know what the reason is, but a more plausible explanation to me would be if it’s simply not the kind of thing they can hide.

“So this justifies our need for more military spending and joining together with Israel’s military”

Just spit balling, but I could see this as a reason for the US to be leaking this info intentionally.

Propaganda may serve other purposes than politically ones.

The military industrial complex for example will be quite happy when people believe that the US really needs to increase their military spending.

Not that I believe anything the government says anymore, but a shitty reading of Sun Tzu is “pretend to be weak when you are strong, pretend to be strong when you are weak.”

Yeah, there’s just no way this could be true, and the internet is considered another theater of war. I wouldn’t take any reports like this at face value.
