Even after a string of recent victories in congressional primaries by members of the Democratic Socialists of America, national Democrats appear slow to recognize that ideologues on the left are attempting a hostile takeover of the party. The DSA’s ascent comes on the heels of a years long effort by socialists and progressive activists to steer one of America’s two major political parties toward identity politics, isolationism, and hostility to capitalism.
Democrats looking for a way to reclaim their party can find inspiration in the career of Neil Kinnock, who in the mid-1980s rescued the British Labour Party from a determined band of sectarian zealots.
Isolationism isn’t as large of an identity of DSA as maybe it has been in the past. Most democratic socialists support aid to Ukraine for example. They just recognize that the nonsense that trump is doing with Iran and the strait of hormuz is putting the US in a bad position for no gain while raising the cost of oil and that what Israel is doing to the Palestinian people is genocide.
DSA in the United States is basically just putting a spotlight on the fact that nearly every other developed nation has free healthcare, as well as other social services like free childcare and free college education.
It doesn’t mean we stop buying and selling things or the socialist boogeyman is going to get you. He only does that if you don’t read the Communist Manifesto before bed.
