    Yeah exactly - and this letter shows that the governor isn’t going to do anything about it.

    He’s “insisting” that Thune begins the process to consider the seat vacant if McConnell can’t serve. “Pwetty pwease can you declare a vacancy? If not I’ll be so sad.”

        If there’s a vacancy he can make an appointment, but it’s hard to say what would happen. The Kentucky constitution allows the governor to fill the vacancy, but the Republican legislature passed a law 2 years ago (for this exact scenerio with Mitch) that said they would need a special election.

        In a sane world, the law would be found unconstitutional and the governor would be able to ignore it and fill the vacancy with whoever he chooses. But who knows how that would play out in the world we live in.
