We’ll see how this plays out. Republican’s got two years to stand up their plan and not screw over Americans and how much it’ll alienate our allies that we buy generics from.

    Where do you kids get these ideas? The government wants to move generics production to the US, rather than pay billions to other countries.

    Well in that case, why stop at drugs? Ban all imports, and save even more! And if people stop trading altogether, then everyone saves trillions! Genius!

    Or… could it be that there is a reason people learn in kindergarten ECO 101 that protectionism is generally not beneficial since it reduces specialization and hence productivity? Maybe that reason is that it’s true?

    The problem they see is that the world will increasingly become dependent on China for drug production. We already have drug shortages.

    If there are already drug shortages, then what you should do is restrict supply by taxing it more. Brilliant!

    No country wants their drug supply to be in the hands of another country.

    There is some need for strategic independence due to geopolitical realities, especially in the military sector. For generic drugs this isn’t a relevant consideration since China, while a major player on the international market for generic drugs, is far from the only one, and generic drugs can be easily sourced from many places.
