My main personal phone is on GrapheneOS, and my work phones are as basic as possible with what they run. The only time I really ever spend on Play Store (and even then I tend to use Obtainium instead) is for when I review retro handhelds which emulate.
You don’t need the full lot of apps, just pick and choose what you want and need! When there is an update to it, Obtainium will fetch and install it for you!
