Interesting theory by Warren. Pass bills targeting key issues and see if the president vetos something popular…
It is critical to draft and pass this legislation, however the problem is that if he does veto, afterwards nothing changes. They get to say “we tried” and that isn’t likely to be enough for voters.
They’ll need help. Get involved. Contact your reps - write to them and make appointments to see their staff at their offices, regardless of their affiliation. Work on building support for popular legislation that benefits the people, directly with those making the decision.
Warren argued Democrats succeeded in midterm contests across the country “by being populist economic fighters who were unafraid to call out the corrupt politicians and corporate interests who have rigged the system at the expense of everyone else.”
“Now, Democrats must deliver,” the progressive senator wrote, urging her party to push Trump to live up to his vow to work with Democrats in the new Congress. “We should force him to do that on the affordability and corruptionissues that drove this election—or call his bluff.”
“The American people want change. Real change. And the midterm election confirms just that,” Sanders said in a video message, pointing to the urgent need to address out-of-control income and wealth inequality, the starvation-level federal minimum wage, unfettered artificial intelligence, the corrupt campaign finance system, the broken for-profit healthcare system, and more.
We’ve been talking about income inequality and unaffordable healthcare for quite some time, more than a few decades. Trump was an aberration who somehow made worse all the things we’ve been complaining about, and wrapped it all up in a catchy PR jingle that made it sound desirable.
We should force him to do…
“Should.” That’s the word to watch. It does all the work.
So you “should” stop watching and call your own rep to demand they deliver.
I think the inherent problem is that there is no real way to overturn a presidential veto without winning a super majority vote in Congress.
Since Trump is termed out and is officially in his lame duck period, there’s not a whole lot of leverage to force him to behave in any particular way.
