Donald Trump led a transformation of the Supreme Court that ushered in a conservative supermajority but soon he will confront an emboldened Democratic-led Senate that is preparing to play hardball on his judicial nominations.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who is likely to return as majority leader next year, promised in an interview with The Associated Press that Democrats will prevent Trump from installing a “right-winger” on the Supreme Court and that they are “not going to allow any crappy nominees” elsewhere in the federal judiciary or in Trump’s Cabinet.

Democrats will hold at least 54 seats next year and as many as 56 depending on final results in Mississippi and Alaska, giving them a significant majority to block Trump’s nominees or just ignore them outright.

I love how the media is already trying to shove schumer and jeffires down our throats. Every single article is written as if they already have speakership. Harass your reps every day to not vote for them.

Fuck the Associated Press for trying to make everybody think Schumer is inevitable when he is definitely not!

    Fixed it for them.

Chuck and Hakeem need to fuck off.

I hope Chuck is not the majority leader. What a waste of the biggest midterm in years for Dems if he takes point. I’d like to see him take a back seat, off committees, generally sidelined.

I’d love for him to immediately resign or at least be successfully primaried by AOC when he’s up in a couple years. Being off committees and sidelined until then, of course.

Hopefully they don’t confirm anyone at all, even if it means an empty seat for two years.

“Will have” being the important part. I wouldn’t put it past the GOP to try to seat as many judges as they can during the lame duck period, knowing it’s their last chance.

Thomas seems to care more about being the longest seated justice than about the wider right wing political project. Alito wants to retire, I think, so he might try to bolt for the exit.

That being said, I don’t think Trump cares all that much, and the people around him who do care will be too busy trying to hold his coalition together to want to spend political capital on a rushed Supreme Court appointment.

Can they remove the assholes that sit there already though? It seems to me like the damage is already done. They can’t block nominations that already went through.

I think they need 60 senators to impeach a judge, so it would have to be slightly bipartisan, so plausible but unlikely.

Trump will likely still be president during the 2028 election, so an even bigger Dem majority isn’t implausible after that. If he croaks, Vance will probably try harder to not rock the boat. I’d expect him to lose a re-election bid but not produce as big a wave in Congress.

Ohh agreed. There is optimism for sure but it is certainly not a guarantee though. I will add I would love to see it happen as so much harm has come out of the SCOTUS this past two years, and anything to revert some of these rulings and bring balance back to the court would be a blessing.

Hmm… looking into it, seems the last expansion was in 1869, which is… a long time ago. Sounds like a nuclear option to me, though maybe a nuclear option of some kind is necessary these days. Still, it sounds like a tall order to justify it.

Add justices and legislate locking the number of justices to the number of circuit courts. There are 11 regional circuits, plus DC, plus Federal. So either raise it to 11 and tie it to regions or raise it to 13 and tie it to total circuit courts. But then also include language for limiting the number of circuit courts. And term limits while we’re at it.

And maybe include the ability to recall reps, senators, presidents, and justices. There’s no reason that fuckers like fetterman and thomas should be allowed to poison democracy with no recourse just because they’re protected enough by their fellow ghouls.
