Donald Trump’s approval just sank to an abysmal 33-66 in the new Washington Post poll, a record low in Post polling. The survey also finds Democrats leading in the battle for the House by eight points. Meanwhile, the new NBC poll also finds Trump below 35 percent and puts the Democratic lead at 10 points. The polling averages also suggest a Democratic lead pressing double digits. Small wonder that Republicans are leaking to Politico that they blame this debacle squarely on Trump. They describe a situation o…

He’s at the Sarah Palin floor.

About 1 in 3 Americans seem to have a brain worm. I know, I know, a whole lot of extremely online “leftists” and reactionary centrists are quick to say no one should blame the voters and the Democratic Party is the source of all problems in the world, but…sheesh.

This guy basically lit fire to everything, including the economy, and 1 in 3 still support him.

I keep bringing this up to people IRL too. I legitimately just do not understand how this is the case. Everyone says it’ll keep dropping, but it just hasn’t. It’s terrifying to know that 1/3 people in the US think like this. I know due to population distribution it’s not exactly like this, but imagine if every third person you interacted with in your daily life still supported this. 3 tellers at the bank? One of them is a rabid supporter of a rapist and felon, have fun! How do we even function as a country? There is something deeply wrong with these people and I don’t even know where to start. I have gone no contact with a few trumpers in the family and they weren’t good people to start with necessarily, but they were contributing members of society. The longer it went on the more angry and entrenched they became. I wonder if they started like this or there’s an element of digging in their heels that has made them unable to believe their lying eyes and ears.

I’m a school bus driver, in a district where trump is universally despised (in the '24 election Harris signs outnumbered trump signs 30:1 and that’s not an exaggeration). In the bus garage, though, the drivers are about 80% trumpers. The commonalities I’ve noticed in the trumpers are:

        • They live elsewhere
        • They are older (60+)
        • They are in horrible shape, overweight, fucked-up knees, smoking-related illnesses etc.
        • They don’t have college degrees
        • They are amazingly dumb, outside of the lack of education
        • They have no sense of humor, do not understand joking or sarcasm
        • They drive aggressively, speeding and ignoring stop signs
        • They hate black people and Jews

I don’t think these observations would surprise anyone.

That third doesn’t trust the same news sources that you do; many don’t do anything political at all, and just vote by party.

The other third is politically educated, they just disagree with the Democratic party on key issues (like for one example abortion).

Democrats are only a third (28% or so) of voters and shrinking (same with Republican party, 28%).

44% of voters are independent. I know it doesn’t seem so on Lemmy, but the real world is a very different place. Why, they didn’t even cheer when Charlie Kirk was assassinated! Unbelievable!

Eh, that 44% number is probably something that nearly evaporates if you were to actually dig deeper on these so-called “independents”.

Yeah, those statistics definitely cannot be used to equate “independent” with “centrist” or suggest those voters are undecided.

I’m not registered with a political party so they probably count me as an independent. I’m not registered because it’s not required for the primary.

But I can’t imagine anything that would convince me to vote for anyone who voluntarily calls themself a Republican in the modern era.

Edit: weird, how’d a 6-day old post show up on my feed. Oh well…

Eh, I wouldn’t say it ‘evaporates’. These are people who don’t like the job either party has done but certainly think one party has done a much worse job. Which they would never vote for.

So they’re not going to change parties but they are hungry for a new party (or a significant change in an existing party).

I’d describe it as a political powder keg waiting to blow if the right forces are applied to it. In a word its discontent, people who’s interests are not being represented by the political process.

You could say Trump tapped into that discontent a bit by appealing to the ones who think the parties aren’t racist enough against immigrants.

He didn’t dispense with the energy because the things he said were problems are largely figments of the racists imagination. So now some immigrants are dead or in concentration camps and those racists are no better off.

DSA is also trying to tap into that energy. Time will tell if they can wield it to become an enduring force in American politics.

Last time there was a powder keg like this that went off FDR was the one that lit the fuse and he won 4 terms. The establishment hated him so much they passed term limits.

That’s what it looks like when someone successfully taps into it in a way that actually resolves the material problems in peoples lives.

These are people who don’t like the job either party has done

There are a few of those. And there is also a large contingent of self-described independents who don’t want to admit that they’re brainless mouth breathers, yet still vote for Trump. I call them embarrassed fascists.

Oh other people absolutely WILL do it for them. That what non-voting does. It surrenders their vote to those that will chose for them.

No corporate media outlet today would publish it. 30% is the absolute lowest they will ever publish. They are all hoping he will win a third term. The media made him and they will apparently do anything to keep him. Fuck corporate media.

“It’s tempting to use the analogy of rats fleeing a sinking ship to describe the growing number of Republican elected officials starting to speak out against Donald Trump. But that’s really not fair to rats, who tend not to be complicit in driving ships to the bottom of the sea.”
