after years of saying this, i gave up. people have integrated facebook into their lives to the degree that saying “delete facebook” is pretty much the same as saying “cut your own balls off.” they won’t do it, no matter if they even acknowledge facebook sucks and is a waste of time. that’s rare, though. usually it’s “i can’t leave facebook, i would lose contact with everyone!” same shit with twitter, instagram, ticktock, snapchat–all that bullshit

The reality is you only lose contact with people who don’t matter enough anymore. When I left around 15 years ago I reached out to those I wanted to keep in touch with and made sure I had their number. Anyone else if they looked hard enough could find me elsewhere if they wanted, or already had means to contact me directly. Most did not.

But guess what? My relationships with people are deeper. It’s been wildly positive for me. The only issue I had at the time was missing out on events from acquaintances, but that’s not an issue anymore with alternative apps

For me, gradually gathering other contacts methods for my close friends and family. And then eventually permanently delete Facebook – no need for data or whatever, it was mostly garbage anyways.

Same process with changing email providers.

You will be locked out of your local community without Facebook. I’ve been off it for over a decade but needed to get rid of a couch without paying $150 to do it and Facebook was 10 minutes and it’s gone. But a couch is one thing. Anything local requires Facebook.

Nah. I mean I’m off Facebook and own a trailer. I’m actually on your side I’m just trying to be realistic. $150 is too high unless you have to hire a company to haul it away.

You can totally leave Facebook. My wife is still on it but I think she doesn’t use it as much. It’s dying, just far too slowly.

              • I would not say life can’t be lived without it, but it’s more so that Facebook has so successfully commodified the public sphere that it seems almost like a natural, inherent part of contemporary communicative actions.

It’s the same way everyone talks about how dating apps suck and it’s ruined dating, etc. But what is the real alternative?

dating apps are different in that you’re specifically using it to get a date, instead of trying to make your life look more fun/happy/glamorous than that of your “friends”. once you meet someone and start a relationship, the app served its purpose and (in theory) you stop using it. i’ve never used a dating app, but i can see the value in them for people who are looking for specific less-than-common traits in a partner-- if you’re asexual (for example) and looking for someone who’s the same, then an app might be the only way you can find that someone. the alternative is go out looking on your own every day until you happen across whatever specific thing you’re looking for by chance, which may never happen.

I remember when the backlash to Xitter was pretty high, culturally. I asked why our company was still using Xitter.

Crickets. And even after he gave the Nazi salute, still no change.

The answer is - “that’s where everyone is”. They aren’t wrong. The network effect sucks.

Meh. “That’s where everyone is” it’s more like that’s where all the bots and algorithmic gatekeeping are. I get way more engagement on mastodon than I ever did on twitter post-2012 algorithm shakeup. Before the algorithmic censorship, I got lots of engagement on twitter. But that twitter hasn’t existed for a long time. When I got on mastodon it was like oh. The algorithm is the entire problem. No wonder OWS and the Arab spring were so big. No wonder the algorithms came after them.

Yeah, it depends on the engagement you are after. Companies are after where all the people are. Not sure if they even care if it’s being propped up by bots and trolls.

Also, companies mostly all just do what other companies do - another network effect. If going on Bluesky or something like Mastodon is not something all the other companies are doing, they won’t.

          You’re preaching deaf ears.

FB Marketplace has crushed all alternatives in many places. But find one where’s that’s not the case, and be sure someone there is going to lecture you on how THEY don’t need it therefore YOU shouldn’t use it, or they never buy/sell anything second hand online, but they absolutely know how you should do that how you shouldn’t do that, without proposing any alternative whatsoever.

I remember the glorious time when beginners seeking help on Linux were getting answers such as “it works on my machine” or “you don’t need to do that, I don’t , instead I do blablabla”. Same vibe.

    They’re not the only ones.

Reddit stole the r/NoKings subreddit and has locked it out. They claim it’s up for adoption as of 5-months-ago but will of course never cede it to the organizers of No King’s.

ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN etc., have barely mentioned it, and it doesn’t remotely come up in Google News save for a sparse few pages of local news stories.

The only good news from representing my area is that while the protest was half the size of past ones, general support from people on the road was much higher with much less dissent.

It connects people with like minded people who also decided to show up so from a networking and community building perspective it’s not worthless. Lots of people meet the contacts that will later recruit them to knock on doors or phone bank or run for office in the future who would never show up to a town meeting or city council meeting.

Sure it does. People build networks at these events. One of the tactics of fascism is to make dissenters feel they are alone and maybe crazy for feeling the way they do. These events tell people that they are not alone, and it is actually the authoritarians that are crazy, not them.

For a non-violent resistance campaign to succeed, you need to build up the numbers and reach a threshold of people working together to impede the actions of the authoritarians. You don’t accomplish this by engaging in violent actions, that just scares people away and gives justification for the authoritarians to do violent reprisals. Violent acts actually help the authoritarians gain more power, non-violent resistance drains their power.

Why wouldn’t they, Suckerberg already bent the knee and kissed the ring. This was an investment by him and these rallies are reducing the value of his investment so he is doing all in his power to slow them down. This has been the identical behaviour of large corporations since world word II when they saluted Nazis because they thought Nazis were going to win.

The best answer is to reduce/stop your usage of websites like facebook and shitter. Yeah I know there is still whatsapp, instagram, google services, android phones etc etc And as they acquire more and more of social media, it becomes hard for a particular individual to completely get off the services these companies provide. But you can pick your battles and atleast remove those which are not really essential to your day to day life.

Suckerberg already bent the knee and kissed the ring

Facebook has always served right wing agendas. long before trump ever came around.

conservatives have always gotten the soft hand, while any liberal rule breakers have gotten the iron fist.

      and the reason is simple.

Conservatives are idiots. They click all the links, they watch all the ads, and they generate magnitudes more money than liberals with their adblockers and their inability to believe every bullshit propaganda fad.

I’d wager if they thought they’d get away with it, they’d just straight up ban anyone thats not a die hard conservative, not for any political agenda, but for the pure monetary exploitation.

I think this time is different though. Previously it was working in concert with people who tried to keep the atrocities behind the curtains and pretended to slap facebook on the wrist when they bent the rules. So everything was somewhat concealed in a facade of a justice system that seemed to care. And tech companies played their part by pretending to care. That did slow things down for tech oligarchs to some extent. They had to navigate their way through the justice system to make sure they still didn’t end up in a legal tangle.

Now Trump comes, he openly expresses the fact he doesn’t give a single shit about any kind of law and is intent on ruling the country like a thug and distort the law for this purpose too. He gives a mandate to every tech company “support me and you can run rampant without even pretending to care about the law, or don’t and perish because I will use the said law to completely destroy you”. And I think none of us were surprised when every big tech kissed the ring because this was their wet dream.

yeah, it was their wet dream because pandering to conservatism has always been a money maker. Its why every social media ever has always given wristslaps to conservatives for major rule violations, while liberal users get bans for minor infractions.

Cause conservatives as their bread and butter money makers. Always have been, Always will be. Nothing has changed except for how openly they parade their preferential treatment.

I would have thought the answers would be self-evident.

Meta/Facebook has literally had political dissidents killed in other countries. Do not think they will hesitate to do the same in their own. Specifically, they gave up GPS/location information on dissidents trying to work together against the government. They were killed. Facebook knew exactly what would happen to them and could have told the dictator to pound sand, but then they might not be allowed to operate there.

Don’t use popular social media like Facebook, X, Reddit, or Discord for any kind of protest. They will always bend the knee to the ‘kings’ you’re protesting against. Every fucken time.

This is the very least shocking thing about Tech Bros. I remember laughing right in the face of someone that told me they had to be on Parler because “Big Tech” was so liberal that they kept canceling conservatives and shadow banning them, etc.

I asked what kinds of “conservative” things they were posting on “Big Tech” that supposedly resulted in that?

You attempt to use one of the instruments of your oppression against the system that wields it. That was never going to work.

No surprises as to why. Indivisible should immediately file the equivalent of an amicus brief to Brazilian courts because they are having these so-called “glitches” with Lula’s campaign as well.

Meta appeared to take down a social media account

Meta didn’t “appear” to take down the social media account, Meta took down the social media account.

    It’s not magic.

You see the same thing here, on Reddit, in forums, they always convince themselves that they’re doing the “right thing” whilst doing the wrong thing.

I’m guessing that opponents of “No Kings” mass reported.

A good post/group should piss people off. But mobs gonna mob so mods gonna mod
